Despite over 30 years of promoting exercise and physical activity to people, the majority stay unmotivated and regularly inactive. Have you ever wondered why it is that most people choose not to move given the multitude of evidence-based health and well-being benefits? This provocative presentation will explain the surprising reasons why our promotion of and teaching about physical activity keeps people stuck in a cycle of starting and stopping but not sustainability. Using story and research, motivation scientist Dr. Michelle Segar will explain why our traditional framing of and conversation about physical activity shoots kids and adults in the foot before they walk out the door. She will present new strategies to cultivate physical activity motivation based on research related to neuroscience, decision making, and marketing. Attendees will learn new ideas that they can immediately put into use.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to...

1. Identify two behavioral motives that undermine high-quality motivation for exercise.
2. Explain one new metaphor for discussing exercise with students.
3. Identify one key important update from the new 2019 Physical Activity Guidelines that will help with exercise counseling and student behavior
