Health and Physical Education Advisor Position Reinstated at the Pennsylvania Department of Education

SHAPE PA would like to congratulate Nicholas Slotterback on returning to his position as the Health and Physical Education Advisor at the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Nick held this position from 2016 to 2019 until he was moved to the Office for Safe Schools at PDE as Safe Schools Coordinator. In 2022, Nick was reinstated as the HPED advisor position.

Nick graduated from Lock Haven University and received his Master’s Degree in Education. Nick taught elementary and middle school health and physical education from 2005 to 2016 in the Midd-West School District where he also served as the Curriculum Coordinator of Health and Physical Education. In addition to teaching, Nick coached JV basketball at Midd-West and Lewisburg Area School District as well as Varsity Track and Field at Lewisburg Area School District. Nick also served as an Educational Consultant for Playworld Play Systems from 2006 to 2018.

Nick led the standards committee on revising the Pennsylvania Academic Health, Safety, and Physical Education standards. The standards committee is now called the Health and Physical Education Program Improvement Committee (HPE PIC). This committee will focus on providing training, resources, and support to health and physical education professionals on the PreK-12 Pennsylvania Health and Physical Education Outcomes.  The other HPE PIC committee members include Jeff Jacobs, Dr. Jennifer Butz, Dr. Kimberley Razzano, Dr. Cindy Allen, and Dr. Jennifer Rudella. Nick and Jennifer Rudella recorded a webinar on how to access the outcomes in PDE SAS.  The video was sent to all intermediate units and SHAPE PA released it on their website.  Please click here to access the webinar.  The committee will be presenting at the 2022 SHAPE PA Annual Convention at Spooky Nook on the PA HPED outcomes. The committee is currently planning a Train the Trainers workshop this summer. Please join the Health and Physical Education Community in PDE SAS and follow SHAPE PA on social media for updates.

SHAPE PA advocated reinstating the HPED advisor at PDE and we would like to thank the advocacy committee for their efforts. Bev Martin, chair of the advocacy committee, said, "SHAPE PA's Advocacy Committee is grateful that PDE has again selected Nick as the Health and Physical Education Content Advisor. The experience and expertise that Nick brings enable him to provide content-specific training and guidance to teachers throughout the Commonwealth, with students ultimately reaping the benefits of learning how to live a healthy, active lifestyle."

SHAPE PA is excited to work alongside Nick and the HPE PIC Committee to continue our mission to lead, advocate, and provide professional development across the Commonwealth!
