Association Awards are given to members for outstanding service and dedication to SHAPE PA and the profession.


Elmer B. Cottrell Award

 

 Ethel G. Encke Award

The Elmer B. Cottrell Award is the highest recognition that SHAPE PA awards. It is presented to a member who has been an outstanding and dynamic teacher, leader, coach, or HPERD administrator for over twenty years.

 
The Ethel G. Encke Award is the second-highest award bestowed upon a member of PSAHPERD, recognizing his/her exceptional service and leadership to SHAPE PA and to the profession.
 

Professional Honor Award

 

Thom Cobb Emerging Leader Award

The Professional Honor Award is given to a SHAPE PA member who has demonstrated distinguished service and scholarship in the allied fields.

  The Thom Cobb Emerging Leader Award recognizes a young professional who exemplifies professionalism and outstanding leadership in Health Education and/or Physical Education.

  


Elmer B. Cottrell 

Prerequisites: 

  • Education: Masters Degree or Equivalent

  • PA Employment last 10 years
  • PSAHPERD/SHAPE PA Member 15 years 

  • Minimum 20 years (outstanding and dynamic teacher, leader, coach or HPE administration)

  • SHAPE America Member for at least 10 years

  • Recipient of PSAHPERD/ SHAPE PA Professional Honor Award


Qualifications/Experience: (minimum of 8)

  • Past President PSAHPERD, Eastern District, or SHAPE America
  • Three or more years as elected officer of PSAHPERD, and/or Local PA association
  • Member of PSAHPERD Executive Board or Board of Directors (minimum of five years)
  • Three or more times as Chair of a section for PSAHPERD Conference or as a member of Eastern District’s Council of Conventions
  • PSAHPERD Journal Editor
  • Convention manager or program chair of a PSAHPERD Conference
  • Chair of five or more different committees of PSAHPERD, ED, or SHAPE America
  • Chair of two committees 6 years or more, PSAHPERD, ED, or SHAPE America
  • Committee work (not chair) for 10 year period or more in PSAHPERD, Eastern District, or SHAPE America
  •  Author or co-author of a published book or professional manual
  • Published and recognized research in the HPE field (dissertation, thesis, research project)
  • Articles in PSAHPERD journal and/or other publications (Blogs)
  • Foreign experience in HPERD
  • Promotional leadership in HPE and related fields including speeches, papers, publicity or community PR, Local Association, PSAHPERD, Eastern District, SHAPE America
  • Professional leadership in HPE for the entire school system (Director of HPE, multi-school coordinator)
  • Leadership in HPE in grant writing or curriculum writing
  • Five or more years with the rank of Professor in professional HPE PA teacher education program
  • Special recognition and honor by professional organizations, or by school administration as an outstanding teacher or educational leader

  • Education: Master’s Degree or Equivalent

    10 years or more in the HPE field

  • Member of PSAHPERD for 10 years

  • Current SHAPE America member

  • Recipient of PSAHPERD Professional Honor Award

  • Local Association nominations must be approved by a majority vote at a regular or special meeting.


Qualifications: 

  • Served as an officer of a PSAHPERD Local, PSAHPERD, District or National Association
  • Chair of a committee a PSAHPERD Local, PSAHPERD, District or National Association
  • Committee work over a period of five or more years in a PSAHPERD Local, PSAHPERD, District or National Association

  • Author or co-author of a book or articles in the field of HPE

  • Presenter of speeches, papers, etc before professional groups, school assemblies, civic organizations public media, etc

  • Research in the field

  • Public relations in promoting HPE

  • Service to the community and school by exhibiting leadership in the field

Professional Honor Award

Prerequisites:

  • Education: Masters Degree or Equivalent
  • 
10 years experience in the HPE in PA
  • 
Member of PSAHPERD for 5 years
  • 
Current SHAPE America member
  • 
Local Association nominations must be approved by a majority vote at a regular or special meeting.


Qualifications (at least 5):

  • Present or past office holder of Local, State, District or National Association
  • 
Chairperson of a committee of a Local, State, District or National Association

  • President or member of an Executive Committee/BOD in any other HPE organization
  • Committee work over a period of three or more years in Local, State, or National Association affiliated with PSAHPERD
  • 
Author of co-author of one or more books in HPE
  • Articles in HPE field

  • Presenter of speeches, papers, etc before professional groups, school assemblies, radio, lunch clubs, etc.

  • Research in the field

  • Promotional work in the field

  • Any other outstanding contribution or service to the Association or the profession of HPE (not included in the above categories)

Thom Cobb Emerging Leader Award

Prerequisites: 

  • Education, minimum Bachelor’s Degree
  • 
Less than 10 years experience in HPE field
  • 
Member of PSAHPERD for 3 years


Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate best practices in his/her field of employment

  • Demonstrates evidence of emerging leadership

  • Accomplishments extend beyond his/her immediate job responsibilities

  • Participation in Professional Development for personal growth
