E.B. COTTRELL AWARD  (Award Application) (Past Recipients)

Who was Dr Elmer B. Cottrell?

Dr. Elmer B. Cottrell arrived at Slippery Normal School, now Slippery Rock University, in 1924. He was a faculty member there until 1948 and taught Tests & Measurements, Anatomy, Kinesiology, and Organization and Administration.

While at Slippery Rock he coached the following sport teams: basketball, football,tennis, golf, and initiated the first swimming team. In 1948, he became Chief of Health, Physical Education and Recreation in the Department of Education. The task assigned to Dr Cottrell was to establish and promote standards for these three areas: public schools, colleges and universities.

Elmer was one of PSAHPER’s founder’s, he took great pride it’s accomplishments. He died in 1956. The first Cottrell Award was given in 1957.

Cottrell Award Requirements


Must meet all of these requirements:

  1. The candidate must be over 45 years of age
  2. PSAHPERD member for 15 years, including the last five years, or last five years prior to retirement
  3. PA employment for last 10 years
  4. Recipient of the PSAHPERD Professional Honor Award prior to nomination




Must meet four (4) of the following seven (7) service criteria:
  1. Past President of PSAHPERD, and/or President or Past President of EDA and/or AAHPERD
  2. Three (3) or more years as an officer of PSAHPERD, and/or a Local Association.
  3. Member of PSAHPERD Executive  Board for a minimum of five (5) years
  4. PSAHPERD Journal Editor – minimum three (3) years
  5. Convention Manager and/or Convention Program Chair of a PSAHPERD, EDA and/or AAHPERD convention – minimum 3 (three) years
  6. Chair of five (5) or more different committees of PSAHPERD, EDA, and/or AAHPERD or chair of two committees six (6) years or more
  7. Committee work (not chair) for ten (10) years or more in PSAHPERD, EDA, and/or AAHPERD




Minimum of 20 years as an outstanding and dynamic HPERD teacher, leader, coach and/or administrator who shows a long-term commitment to the profession as evidenced by meeting a minimum of 5 of the following criteria:
  1. AAHPERD member minimum of ten (10) years, including last five years
  2. Articles in PSAHPERD Journal and/or other publications
  3. Recognized HPERD researcher and/or published author
  4. Advocacy in HPERD field and related fields (e.g., presentations, papers, publicity)
  5. Ten (10) years or more as a teacher and/or an administrator in HPERD
  6. Ten (10) years or more as a professor in a HPERD degree granting institution of higher education
  7. Special recognition and honor by professional organizations, or by school administration as an outstanding teacher or educational leader.
  8. Has national certification recognition in a HPERD related field (e.g., National Board Certification in Health, National Board Certification in Physical Education, America College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Certified Adapted Physical Educator (CAPE), etc)
